After a warm welcome we are taken into the belly of the meeting house to watch an innovative light display that cleverly retells the creation story of the Ngāti Awa people. Having entered the house we are invited to sit on the right hand side of the building, traditionally the men and Chief of the visiting party sit in front of their women folk. Respecting this tradition I take my place behind Ben and we watch as the members of the house explain its history through traditional Māori songs and movement. Mataatua Wharenui – the meeting house – has always been a focal point for Māori communities. Steeped in significance it sits at the heart of the culture and is thought of as the ancestral house. I am a part-Hawaiian travel blogger, and always try to weave parts of my cultural heritage into my travel tales from around the world. My mother is a Native Hawaiian, and we were raised in a traditional way that is very similar to the Maori. Even their language is closely related to ours, and I could roughly translate many of their words. For example, wharenui would be transliterated halenui in Hawaiian, written somewhat differently but pronounced basically the same. To us, it means a great home that is the center of family life. Like the Maori, heritage, or mana, is very important to Native Hawaiians.
We love immersing ourselves in the heritage of the cultures we visit and find it is always such an eye opening experience. The past is always tainted with the actions of those who choose to discriminate, it was wonderful to see such a positive end to the journey of Mataatua. Over the course of the next century the house was erected inside out exposing the delicate spiritual carvings to the elements on more than one occasion.

But most of our furniture is from secondhand stores or Goodwill. I recommend going to a few different stores over a 5 day period and you'll find all you need for really cheap.

In the 1870’s Ngāti Awa built a magnificent carved Wharenui known as Mataatua. A symbol of unity it renewed their strength and celebrated their heritage, and was largely accepted by the surrounding European population.
